MANN+HUMMEL Embraces Breast Cancer Awareness Month

• “Wear Pink Fridays” to raise awareness
• Breast Cancer Survivor Day to honor survivors and those lost
• Mobile mammography to offer free on-site services

October 29, 2020 – For Gastonia’s MANN+HUMMEL team, October was filled with a variety of activities to promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month while celebrating survivors and fondly remembering those lost to the battle.

At the company’s Allen Plant, with over 800 employees, the team raised awareness with “Wear Pink Fridays,” which encouraged employees to get creative and raise awareness for breast cancer.
The site also held a Breast Cancer Survivor Day on October 22, which consisted of a small socially distant gathering for each shift. The group formed a Survivor Parade and signed the Breast Cancer Survivor Board, where they were also given a small gift on behalf of MANN+HUMMEL.

“In this moment, we honored the strength and fortitude of those who continue to strive and thrive after a breast cancer diagnosis,” said Scott Carter, Human Resource Business Partner for MANN+HUMMEL Operations. “We honored those that have struggled, those that have supported them on the journey, and also in memory of those who have been lost in the struggle. It was a very poignant and touching moment to honor all of those that have been affected by breast cancer.”

Because the sharing of stories can encourage and support others, MANN+HUMMEL’s HR and EHS team are in the process of gathering stories of resilience from survivors & supporters. Their stories of hope, resilience and strength will be shared on the company’s internal social platform.

As early detection is critical, MANN+HUMMEL hosts an annual on-site Mobile Mammogram every fall, which provides free mammograms to employees on the company health plan. The 2020 event, held in partnership with Charlotte Radiology, will be held on November 3 and will be taking full COVID-19 precautions. The goal of the mobile mammogram is to find early, often asymptomatic breast cancer when it is the most treatable.

MANN+HUMMEL has also supported organized runs and activities to support cancer-related charities. In 2020, MANN+HUMMEL celebrated 15 years as a proud supporter of Relay for Life, which benefits the American Cancer Society. While the pandemic has put a damper on organized running events, MANN+HUMMEL employees participated in the Community Foundation Virtual Run which also benefits local cancer-related charities.

“As Breast Cancer Awareness Month draws to a close, we are still facing the staggering fact that every two minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States,” continued Carter. “While MANN+HUMMEL as a company cannot fight the disease, our hope is that we can spread awareness, encouraging our people to be proactive in the fight against breast cancer. And if a member of our team is diagnosed, they know that they have a strong team behind them to support them every step of the way.”
